Virtualization

In computing, virtualization refers to the act of creating a virtual (rather than actual) version of something, including virtual computer hardware platforms, operating systems, storage devices, and computer network resources.

For instance, virtualization allows for more complete, and Intelligent, use of hardware resources by allowing multiple servers to run on a single server chassis. In addition to utilizing the processing power, storage and available RAM, this virtual server (VM) relieves the burden of being bound to a particular hardware structure.  Stored as a "flat" file the VM can me much more rapidly recovered or migrated. Transitions to new hardware or disaster recovery takes minutes vs hours (sometimes days!)
